Meeting opened at 12.00
Mark Watson introduced himself – active fireman and advisor on community risk. He spoke about the priorities:
Prevention – How and why risk is happening?
Response – How do the Fire Service respond to risk?
Reflect – What went right? What went wrong?
Efficiency – Who are the best people for the jobs/tasks available?
I spoke about our village and that it was fundamental that we collaborate with the Fire Service to make our community safe. I mentioned that it would be useful to meet and discuss further what we can do as a community to support the Fire Service. Annabelle Priest was very keen to further this discussion. Emma (the Chairman of the meeting) suggested that I wrote an email to start the conversation to comments@dsfire.gov.uk. Further discussion would be an opportunity to share risks and to discuss relevant local issues with the Fire Service.
Dave, the DATA man highlighted some interesting facts:
£2.5 million is the cost of one death on the road in an RTC.
£80,000 is the cost of an injury sustained on the road in an RTC.
7% of RTC (Road Traffic Collisions) involve foreign drivers. Nearly all RTCS involve drivers within 0.8 miles of their homes.
There are 18,000 miles of roads in the region; you can travel to Tokyo and back three times and still have a few miles to spare. Over 60% of our region is rural. It is the largest Fire Authority in the country.
Meeting participants spoke about the Safe System Approach, Learn 2 Live for 16-24 year olds which involves educating younger people around road safety/theatre style session to encourage an understanding of road safety

Meeting participants spoke about the concept of Graduated Driving Licence scheme being launched. The Government were very keen, now not so keen. The general feeling in the meeting was that the concept itself was extremely useful and would probably reduce the number of deaths on the road significantly.
Members also spoke about Biker Run and Streetwise – to increase safety for motorcyclists and Bikeability for walkers and cyclists.
