There are so many reasons for choosing to move into this village, but most people have done their homework and know it is a great place within which to live, work and play.

We want to ensure that you feel welcomed and able to settle in quickly.

Neighbours might be the first place to which you go; asking for bits of information and for their ideas of how the village works – when the recycling is collected etc. You should find that neighbours are very willing to help. We all recognise that moving can be very stressful, tiring and sometimes a bit strange. You will find lots more useful information and news about the local areas in local publications such as the Beacon, The Moorlander, Dartmoor News, Okehampton Times and Oke links etc.

This welcome is from the Parish Council, which comprises some of the active local residents who represent the needs and views of parishioners. These have responsibilities as local councillors for a few of the local services and assets, but link closely with those public agencies that have more responsibilities.

We have provided the contact details for the Councillors and the Clerk, who is the first point of contact for representations to the Council. Do call on us, or stop us in the street for a chat. You are always welcome to get involved; to attend one of the Council meetings, or to become a Councillor.

Our meeting agendas and minutes are displayed here on the village website and on the Parish noticeboard on the wall of the Taw River Inn.

The more you become informed and involved, the more at home you may feel.

Although we are a small Parish of less than 400 electors, the responsibilities we hold are increasing as reductions in services are happening at other levels. We have a special responsibility to reflect the views of every resident of all ages. What you and your neighbours need and feel about this area is important. We feed this into our plans and any plans that affect this area.

We are essentially part of the Dartmoor National Park, and we work closely with other Parishes to maintain and improve opportunities and experiences. You will know that we are part of the Beacon Villages, in the shadow of the Cosden Beacon. We are proud to work alongside Belstone, South Zeal and South Tawton villages – even the local newsletter that you can buy in the Store is called The Beacon or you can subscribe for monthly delivery. www.thebeacondartmoor.uk

The Sticklepath community website www.sticklepath.org has information about clubs and societies as well, and there is a Facebook page Sticklepath (Okehampton) Community Group

You might want to know who volunteers to sweep out the bus shelters and who volunteers to keep kerbs and flowering areas tidy. You might want to know more about the rich heritage of the village.

There are plenty of ways to feel involved and engaged.

Within the village we have a Community Response Plan which identifies the key contacts to be used when there is an emergency or when neighbours require help and support. We do not anticipate disasters in this area, but it is better to be prepared and we welcome involvement of any resident who has skills and ability to respond. Talk to one of your Councillors about the Plan.

We hope you enjoy the village as much as we do and that you will feel fully part of it.
