Sharing responsibility for your community

Sticklepath Parish Council is the community level of local government, working on behalf of the village. There are only seven councillors, but we are short of two, could you fit the bill?

Perhaps residents need to understand a bit more about what being a Councillor entails.

What does the village council do?

Generally, there are monthly Council meetings which last 2 hours, with some reading of papers in between. Importantly, we have responsibility for public funds, and there is the chance to comment on planning applications for any work on properties in the village. More generally, there is the opportunity to improve the quality of life and the environment in this area. We try to identify the issues which are important to the residents we represent. That can mean supporting local projects, lobbying other service providers and working in partnership with other Councils.

Councillors may take special interest in some topics. For example, you could be interested in the traffic issues or about the green spaces in the parish. You may have ambitions for the playing field. You may have a concern for Dartmoor and be willing to liaise with the agencies who manage it. We need to maintain the defibrillator, bus shelters and the dog bins.

We balance formality with easy teamwork in order to meet objectives and respond to local issues and concerns. Have a look at our Council minutes and find the contact details for current Councillors and Parish Clerk, or stop one of us in the street for a chat.
